Clay nativity figurine, entirely handmade in a traditional workshop in Marseille.
The Melchior Provencal santon adds a touch of nobility and symbolism to your Christmas nativity scene. Together with the santons of Gaspard and Balthazar, it forms an emblematic trio, reflecting the diversity of peoples and the recognition of the divinity of Jesus throughout the world. Their journey symbolises the universal adoration of the Baby Jesus. Each of the Three Wise Men brings a meaningful gift, and Melchior brings gold, a symbol of royalty.
The wise man Melchior is often depicted with a white beard, dressed in a sumptuous cloak and holding a precious casket.
In the nativity scene, the wise men traditionally appear on 6 January, Epiphany Day, but they are often included when the nativity scene is set up to complete the picture of the Nativity.
