Provence figurine magus Balthazar

A beautiful Provencal figurine Magus Balthazar to complete your Provencal nativity scene with the three wise men who came from the East to celebrate the birth of Christ. This iconic character is an essential part of the Nativity scene.

Made from clay using traditional craftsmanship, this Balthazar figurine from Provence is entirely handmade in a traditional figurine workshop in Marseille. Each piece is unique, carefully crafted to convey the authenticity and beauty of the Christmas crib.

The Provence santon of the wise man Balthazar is recognisable by his darker skin, and his first name is that of a prince of Babylon. He symbolises the openness of the Christian message to all peoples of the world. Balthazar is often depicted holding a box containing myrrh, a precious aromatic resin used in sacred rites, evoking the future suffering of Christ.

The Three Wise Men, Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar, represent the three continents known at the time (Africa, Asia and Europe), illustrating the universal significance of the birth of Jesus. Their presence in the Christmas crib enriches the scene with a powerful symbolic dimension. Their arrival, celebrated on 6 January during Epiphany, marks the recognition of Jesus as the saviour of the world. The santons of the Three Wise Men in their Provençal nativity scene complete the Nativity scene. The addition of the santon of Balthazar contributes to this representation full of faith, diversity and tradition.
