The Heart of Jesus, burning with love and pierced by suffering, is the visible sign of God's infinite love for humanity. The crown of thorns that surrounds it symbolises not only the physical suffering he endured, but also his compassion for the wounds of each individual. The rays emanating from this heart express the light, mercy and grace that are being poured out on the world.

This watercolour is an interpretation of the bas-relief that adorns the main altar in the basilica. The wound on the Heart of Jesus was made after his death. It is a post-mortem wound that can never heal. The wound of the Heart always remains open for believers, allowing the flood of grace to flow towards them. In imitation of Jesus, our wounds are also places of grace. Saint Paul puts it another way: ‘When I am weak, I am strong...’. (2 Corinthians 12:10).

This Sacré-Coeur card is made in France, hand-painted by Sister Marie Espérance, a Dominican. Sister Marie-Espérance, a Dominican nun committed to apostolic life, designs each of her cards in a spirit of prayer. For her, painting is a language that enables her to convey beauty and goodness. On each of her creations, a small robin, discreetly placed, marks her presence: it's her personal signature.
